You learn new things all the time, but how does that take place? As a teacher, you have a duty—to teach children to learn. How do you contribute to children’s learning? In my doctoral dissertation, The Shifting Meaning of Learning—Expressed by Preschool Teachers in a Continuing Education Course, I investigated how preschool teachers perceive what they are learning in a continuing education course and how they participate in children’s learning in their professional practice. I also studied how teachers’ perceptions of their own learning have changed during the continuing education course. One finding is that a condition for learning is that the object to be learned should be varied. How can you, as a teacher, discover the variation that children/students themselves create and use it in your teaching? And how can you, as a teacher, use this variation in teaching that you initiate so that children/students will understand what they are learning?
I teach and supervise both undergraduates and teachers returning for advanced courses. I also like to lecture on, for instance: developmental education, preschool curriculum, documentation, plans for individual development. I have also initiated and performed a number of developmental projects geared to study how preschool teachers develop greater competence and awareness of how they can contribute to children’s learning of various aspects of content.
